Does clutter drive anyone else absolutely crazy? Matt and I live in a pretty small apartment so it doesn’t take very long for clutter to accumulate. About two or three times a year I’ll do a deep clean and I’m always amazed at how much stuff I ‘find’ that we no longer use.
This time it most of the clutter was hidden in our kitchen cupboards. They were packed full of random ingredients from recipes that I only made once and won’t likely make again. But since I HATE wasting food, my project for the past few weeks has been using up those ingredients.
Which brings me to these brownies.
One of the random ingredients I found was a bottle of Jack Daniel’s whiskey. I hate whiskey so I honestly don’t know where it came from, but since I’ll do almost anything to avoid wasting food, I was determined to find a way to use it.
After a bit of research, I decided my best bet was to add it into something with chocolate. Some of my favorite treats include alcohol and chocolate so I figured it was worth a try. Brownies seemed like they would be the most promising so I pulled out all the ingredients and got to work.
Right before I combined the wet and dry ingredients I added in the whiskey and honesty guys, it smelt terrible. Did I just ruin what would have been a perfectly good batch of brownies? Even the batter didn’t taste all that great…
But despite the strong smell of the batter, I could not have been happier with how they turned out! They were rich, moist, and super fudgy. Basically, everything you want in a brownie with a hint of whiskey that surprisingly pairs really well with the dark chocolate.

- 3/4 tsp Salt
- 1 Tbsp Cocoa Powder
- 3/4 Cup Dark Chocolate Chips
- 2 tsp Instant Coffee
- 3/4 Cup Butter
- 1 1/4 Cups White Sugar
- 1/3 Cup + 1 Tbsp Brown Sugar, packed
- 2 tsp Vanilla
- 1/4 Cup Jack Daniels Whiskey
- 4 Eggs
- 1/3 Cup Dark Chocolate Chips
- 1/3 Cup Milk Chocolate Chunks
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 350F.
-
Line a 9x9" cake pan with parchment paper and set aside.
-
In a medium sized bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and cocoa powder. Set aside.
-
Place 3/4 cups dark chocolate chips, instant coffee, and the butter in a large microwavable bowl. Microwave on half power in 30 second increments until smooth.
-
Add the sugars, vanilla, and whiskey to the melted chocolate and stir until combined. Allow to cool 10 minutes.
-
Add the eggs two at a time, mixing until just combined. Do not to over mix.
-
Gently stir in the flour mixture, dark chocolate chips, and milk chocolate chunks until just combined. Pour into prepared baking pan.
-
Bake for 40 to 45 minutes until the top is shiny and the edges are pulling away from the pan.
-
Using a toothpick, check if your brownies are done. A few crumbs and chocolate should stick to the toothpick, but there shouldn't be any uncooked batter.
